As with most of the world in 2020, Stone Temple Pilots bassist Robert De Leo suddenly found himself with a lot of unexpected time on his hands. Having been one of the chief songwriters in STP since their debut album (1992's Core), De Leo put this time to good use and embarked on writing and recording his first solo album, Lessons Learned.

Released on October 21, 2022, the album is billed as a De Leo solo offering, but several vocalists and guest players contributed. It does not musically reflect what many would expect from a Stone Temple Pilot, with songs that are much more folk/country-tinged.

A week before the album's release, De Leo took us through it track by track.

Lessons Learned, the debut solo album from Stone Temple Pilots songwriter, bassist and backing vocalist Robert DeLeo, is the kind of record that feels as familiar as it does foreign. The overall format of the music is distinctly different to that of his main band, who became alternative rock royalty following the release of 1992 debut album Core.

The electric guitars, for example, are used sporadically and ornamentally instead of fundamentally – there are no screaming AC30s or VHT/Demeter racks to be found here, as usually seen on his brother Dean’s side of the stage in STP. A lot of the new music feels more firmly rooted in country rock than anything you could term ‘grunge’.

At the same time, the new recordings share some unmistakable similarities with the band DeLeo has built a career out of playing in – you can tell some of these songs have come from the same creative place, even if the instrumentation this time round feels somewhat different.

If any rocker has earned the right to call his solo debut album Lessons Learned, it's Robert De Leo. Over the course of his career, De Leo has seen highs and lows, sometimes having them intertwine at the exact same moment, as when Stone Temple Pilots were riding high during the heyday of alternative rock in the 1990s. During one of STP's hiatuses, De Leo stepped away from the group to form Talk Show, a busman's holiday that found him mining a similar vein to his main gig. He repeated this pattern through the years, which is what makes the warm, burnished feel of Lessons Learned come as a bit of a surprise: De Leo is venturing into new territory here. Using the sun-bleached country-rock of the early 1970s as a foundation, De Leo anchors his solo album with acoustic instruments, broadening his horizons enough to encompass a sweet, swirling psychedelia vaguely reminiscent of Led Zeppelin in their folk mode. De Leo invites a host of singers -- Jimmy Gnecco of Ours, Kara Britz, Tim Bluhm of Mother Hips, Pete Shoulder, and Gary Wright among them -- to better articulate the mood of a particular song. De Leo himself sings the murmuring closer "Is This Goodbye." Despite this large cast of characters, Lessons Learned feels unified thanks to De Leo keeping a focus on emotion, conveying feeling through songcraft and quietly textured production, sounds that emphasize a soft, enveloping warmth as much as melody. It's an understated album but it's not slight: it's a rich, reflective record, one that serves as comfort during moments of contemplation.

Lessons Learned All Music Review

Stone Temple Pilot’s bassist and principal songwriter, Robert De Leo, recently released his first solo album, Lessons Learned, featuring a host of collaborators, including other vocalists on each song except one, but the album also featuring a wide range of De Leo’s own acoustic instruments collected over the years. The individual songs focus on different aspects of relationships, and as the title suggests, each song has a particular idea or mood to impart. The whole project was born out of De Leo’s goal of returning to his guitar playing and enjoying his instrument collection while exploring these ideas.

With a career that has accumulated many milestones and tremendous achievements in the span of almost four decades, Stone Temple Pilots’ Robert DeLeo has just now notched off a new accomplishment at age 56. With the release of Lessons Learned, DeLeo marks his debut as a solo artist through the deeply personal and beautifully emotive album. Though taking the spotlight in this way is a first, songwriting is nothing new to the seasoned bassist, as he has always served as the principal writer for Stone Temple Pilots, alongside his guitarist brother Dean, drummer Eric Kertz, and the band’s latest singer, Jeff Gutt. Stylistically, the album differs greatly from his alternative-rock writing with STP, as energetic riffs, bold bass runs, and distorted lines are traded for warm acoustic tones, folk and roots influences, and at the heart of it all, simplicity.

Direct from my vault, this is an origial signed 8x10 of me playing my favorite bass on stage?

This signed drumhead was signed by me and my brother in 2001 after playing Madison Square Garden.  It's been in my vault for decades.

This rare 8x10 photo was taken during an STP tour and is signed by the original band members, including Scott Weiland. It comes from my personal memorabilia stash that I’ve been building for over 30 years.

Each one is hand-signed and a true piece of music history.
